DESPAÑA WINE TASTING & TAPAS EVENT | René Barbier of CLOS MOGADOR
We are thrilled to host one of the most important names in Spanish Winemaking here at Despaña for an intimate tasting of legendary Priorat.
Wednesday, February 26th from 7:30-9:30pm
with René Barbier Jr. of Clos Mogador
Son of the Priorat pioneer, also named René Barbier, he makes the wines for Clos Mogador, Venus la Universal (with his childhood friend and wife, Sara Perez, winemaker for Mas Martinet) as well as the 8-person collaboration, La Vinya del Vuit.
He and Sara make the epitome of a vigneron “power couple.” Both come from a multi-generational history of family winemaking yet it was only until the two took a roadtrip researching European vineyards that the sparks really began to fly. United through their love of wine, and similarities in ethos, they blossomed into what they were destined to become.
On their philosophy, Sara remarks: “Some years ago, René and I made the decision to move through this world with the intention of leaving an emotional footprint, not a material one.’ This quote from Sara beautifully and succinctly summarizes the stance that she and René take towards human beings’ interaction with their environment. Organics and sustainability are not a sales pitch for them, they are a way of life.”
These wines are exemplary and we don’t come across an opportunity to open and taste them like this very often.
Guided by the winemaker himself, we will taste the following with small bites:
Clos Mogador 2016 ($100/btl)
Clos Mogador 2017 (preview, not yet released ($100/btl)
Clos Mogador “Nelin” 2017 (the ultra-rare white wine made of Garnatxa Blanca & Macabeo)
As always, space is very limited and tickets are non-refundable. Please let us know of any dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate.
Discounts on pre-arrival wines will be offered the night of this tasting.
